Minimalism meets art-loving funk for East Coast transplants, who wanted vibrant colors, handcrafted housewares, and modern furniture to complement the sparse backdrop of their mid-century Berkeley home. The result is a series of connected spaces that leverage the home’s stunning bay views and original features. Though the work on this project evolved over the course of five years, it never wavered from the original brief—balancing the serene canvas of white walls with punctuated pops of color, texture, and craft.
This home’s existing cast concrete fireplace, with its tactile 60’s vibe, offered a strong starting point for the design. The client’s expansive art collection, which ranges from Miro to Cindy Sherman, added visual richness and inspiration. In response, the home became a gallery, and each room was furnished with timeless, but still individual pieces that complemented the art while expressing the client’s personality.
